Their thirst for happiness is total... They both believe that they have found the saving solution in love and they both make this feeling their only refuge, their only hope. The fact that in this desperate attempt to get out of the darkness, the destinies of the two heroes collide, canceling each other out, emphasizes the tragedy of their existence without a way out, the lack of any possibility of salvation.
