Zaza Jorbenadze
Zaza Jorbenadze (June 2, 1959 - April 28, 2021) was a prominent Georgian filmmaker, screenwriter, and visual artist. A graduate of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, Jorbenadze belonged to a generation of creators who merged the classical traditions of Georgian cinema with a modern, often surrealist, aesthetic.
He is perhaps most recognized for his directorial work on the 1994 film "Ochabamba" and for his sophisticated visual contributions as an Art Director on films such as Zaza Khalvashi's "Ak, chventan" (There, with Us) in 1990. His work was characterized by a meticulous attention to composition and atmosphere, treating the cinematic frame with the same care as a canvas.
Beyond the director’s chair, Jorbenadze was a dedicated artist whose paintings mirrored the themes found in his films: a deep exploration of memory, heritage, and the poetic beauty of the Georgian landscape. His legacy remains a testament to the idea that cinema and fine art are not separate disciplines, but a single, continuous dialogue.
